BYD Auto China patent has filed a patent application for their development of a tin cobalt carbon anode material for lithium ion batteries. BYD is the largest selling automotive brand in China and a global leader in electric vehicles.

The patented product uses 5% tin in a composite structure with a tin cobalt carbon alloy outer shell around a carbon inner core shell. Today’s anodes already use carbon materials and this product is part of the next generation of materials, already in use, that add silicon, tin and other metals to boost capacity. The tin cobalt carbon combination was pioneered some years ago at Dalhousie University, Canada, who also recently published work to scale up production for the material.

BYD, backed by investor Warren Buffet, recently predicted an ambitious shift to electric vehicles by 2030, incentivised by China government pressure to reduce air pollution, and it is increasingly possible that China will lead the way in technology developments.
