Baseresult Holdings Limited has begun purchasing more underground mining equipment as it accelerates plans to re-open the South Crofty mine in Cornwall.

The BBC’s website reports that the company aims to have the mine, closed in 1998, back in full-scale production within two to four years.

However the plan is opposed by the South West Regional Development Agency, which has a competing plan for a large leisure, industrial and housing development adjacent to the mine site.

A planning enquiry into a smaller development scheme put forward with Baseresult’s support is due to reach a conclusion next month.

The mine was producing some 2,100 tpy of tin-in-concentrate before its closure, but could potentially re-open with a larger capacity.
