TIN 101

Making the Future

Tin is already a little-known but essential metal, present in numerous products used every day. From solder, the glue that joins together all electronics, to tinplate food cans, PVC windows and even the glass that is in them, tin is ubiquitous.

As a technical metal its unique properties give a robust demand base today as well as multiple new opportunities in green energy and digitalisation technologies for the future, without which global ambitions simply cannot be achieved.

However, while there are abundant tin reserves and resources, attention is rapidly turning to urgently needed investment. Existing mines are maturing, and the new project pipeline is thin, making securing supply a priority over the next decade. Technology advances in recycling may unlock tin in e-waste and small-scale mining could give some cushion but government intervention may be needed.

Additionally, market dynamics have become increasingly turbulent over the last five years as a series of macroeconomic shocks have impacted demand and supply continues to be disrupted, mainly by increased resource nationalisation. Increasing ESG focus, as with all metals, is also beginning to impact supply chains.

The tin industry is relatively small and able to work together to navigate these challenges and uncertainties. New investor and government interest is now coming into the tin space as the world wakes up to the crucial role of tin in making the future.

TIN 101 is a 26-slide deck offering a summary of the current state of play of the tin market and outlook to 2030. This report gives a strong introduction to the tin industry for newcomers, including charts and tables of ITA’s authoritative supply/demand data.
