Startup company StoreDot, voted by the tech world as the number one most disruptive startup, has applied for a patent using tin as the main constituent of its lithium-ion battery anodes.

The patent application is for an anode made from 5-80% tin, alloyed with silicon and containing nanoparticles of other active particles notably boron carbide and amorphous carbon. The resulting compositions are complex mixtures designed to optimise the flow of lithium ions, including a buffer zone to prevent buildup and dendrite formation, known to degrade performance and compromise safety.

The project, funded by Daimler Mercedes-Benz truck division and Samsung, is developing a ground-breaking FlashBattery technology it claims can charge a smartphone or electric vehicle in less than five minutes. A OneGiga megafactory production unit is planned for 2022.
