Tinplate is a significant tin using industry, globally the third largest user of tin, 14 per cent of world consumption in 2016. ITA, previously the International Tin Research Institute, has a long history of support for the sector. ITA continues this activity through its Tinplate membership scheme and its organisation of the International Tinplate Conference every four years.
The Tinplate Group membership represents segments of the industry supply chain, including tinplate producers, can makers and lacquer suppliers. This combined expertise and global perspective provides a powerful forum for tackling key technical, environmental, and legislative challenges facing the tinplate packaging industry.
Tinplate Group membership enables access to our Tinplate Knowledge Hub which contains all previous Tinplate Conference proceedings and archive documents.
Membership of the ITA Tinplate Group gives the opportunity to get more involved in specific technology projects, meetings and discussions. Ongoing project work focuses on chrome free passivation, lacquer & corrosion issues & test methods.
Members also receive discounted delegate fees for the International Tinplate Conference, to be held for the next time in 2029.

CRFREE2 Project
The CRFREE2 project is a unique cross-supply-chain technical platform evaluating chrome-free passivation technologies for tinplate. It is open to both existing and new members of the Tinplate Group.
The original CRFREE1 project, launched in 2006, captured up to 20 years of accumulated research and industry experience on the topic, aiming to agree on a single product solution. Building on this foundation, the current project consortium was reformed in 2018 and continues technical trials under an MoU, while tracking EU regulatory shifts and commercial deployments of CFPA.
Project data is shared on a Knowledge Hub, including a research archive and relevant content from previous Tinplate Conferences. Project calls take place every two months to share technical updates, discuss progress, and address key topics of interest.
We welcome participation by all members of the tinplate supply chain as this industry-critical issue heads towards rapidly approaching implementation timescales.
