The Malaysia Smelting Corporation announced the immediate appointment of Patrick Yong as company Chief Executive Officer on Friday, following the departure of Mr Chua Cheong Yong.

Dr Patrick Yong was previously the Managing Director of MSC’s wholly owned subsidiary, M Smelt (C) Sdn Bhd. He has a PhD in Electrical Engineering and 40 years of experience in global business operations. Chua, who resigned to pursue personal interests, contributed more than 30 years of service to MSC, with two years as deputy group CEO from 2012 followed by two years as group CEO

Yong stated: “I am honoured and excited with the opportunity to lead and advance MSC into the next phase of our strategic development. The fast-paced changes of this world demand that we can adapt quickly, easily and at a minimal cost while retaining the focus on each business divisions. Our future set-up must effectively respond to these challenges.

ITRI View: MSC is the world’s second largest tin mining and smelting group with refined tin production from its Butterworth smelter totalling 30,209 tonnes in 2015, while tin-in-concentrate produced from the company’s Rahman Hydraulic open pit mine totalled 2,196 tonnes. The company purchased three plots of industrial land in Port Klang In June this year, part of its long-term plan to relocate its smelting operations. The company is dual-listed on the Bursa Malaysia and Singapore Exchange.
