Malaysia Smelting Corporation Berhad has completed installation of a 6th reverberatory furnace at its Butterworth based smelter.
The smelting plant has operated on 5 furnaces since the beginning of the 1960’s, producing around 35,000 tpy of refined tin in recent years. The addition of a 6th furnace, purchased and integrated at a cost of US$1 million, is a significant event for the company and is expected to increase tin smelting capacity by 15%. The new furnace will improve the smelter flow-sheet and will permit increased feed volume, reduction of intermediate stocks and an enhanced by-product stream.
In a statement, MSC said: “The expansion is in line with the Company’s strategy to consolidate its position as the largest and most cost effective custom tin smelter in the world. It also demonstrates the Company’s continued confidence in the tin industry going forward. MSC Group has a strong reputation in the global tin industry and its Butterworth smelter remains a reliable smelting outlet for producers of primary and secondary tin bearing materials.”
